GPS question re- Standalone GPS listed as a feature of the Storm

johnnj2003

I'm about to buy this phone from Verizon this coming Friday.

one question has come up after doing a lot of reading about it.
The RIM web site says this phone has Standalone GPS and A-GPS, and supports LBS.

My question to all that own this phone on Verizon's network. Is the GPS still locked down meaning you can only use GPS if you pay for VZ navigator? or does it work, out of the box, like standalone GPS should work.
Meaning could I install Google Maps, and it would show me my current location,
again without paying for VZ Navigator.

I want this phone either way, thanks all and I hope my question makes sense.

the phone comes with this application called "maps" and you can actually use it as a gps..it will locate where you are.. and navigate from there.. the only difference between "maps" and "vznavigator" is that vznavigator tells you turn-by-turn like a real gps and "maps" gives u a list of turns you have to follow.

hope u understand what im trying to say.. good luck!

when u get the phone.. ask the verizon rep to let you test try the vznavigator for a month.. i think they offer that.. just gotta cancel it within that month.

the gps will only work if you have vz nav.

a lot of other apps can use the gps in the storm, but if you dont have the vzw for 10/month, the gps will not work.

im 95% sure of this.

I know that if you want the VZ Navigator
you have to pay for it.
But I had read in previous posts in this forum about the Standalone GPS chip.

So are you sayin Verizon disabled the standalone gps chip in the Storm too?

no, im saying that without the vznav service, the gps wont work. i sold someone a storm, they came in asking about the gps, i set it up for him and it did not work. i asked if he had vznav and he said no, and thats why it wouldnt work.

i have vznav, and my storm with blackberry maps will pick up about 10-11 satalites. google maps is still just approxomit(sp?).

hope this helps, and i love my storm, just be prepared for it to have some minor issues and not be perfect, but nothing is perfect.

Were you indoors or outside when you tried the GPS and Blackberry Maps app?
(not vznavigator or google maps)
Real GPS needs exposure to the sky.

I'm still unclear if the standalone gps chipset works out of the box with the "Maps" feature on the phone when its new out of the box.

Your saying the VZ Navigator needs $$ to big V to work, I knew that. 😲)

Your saying they even disable the onboard
Standalone GPS too, and makes Blackberry Maps app not work either?

I ordered my storm yesterday, should be here tomorrow. I have VZ Nav free for one month.
A day or so after I turn VZ nav off via customer service, I will go stand outside and see if Blackberry Maps application will still work via the standalone GPS chipset that is in this phone. I know that app is not as robust as VZ Navigator. But it is separate.

VZ Navigator works through A-GPS, so I can understand that the 10$ fee applies.

The built-in standalone GPS chipset used with
the BlackBerry Maps, free, works out of box.

If Im wrong I will let you know right away.
But do a search for the word "GPS" under this Blackberry Stor...

i dont know why this is so difficult, but here is the deal with the storm, im going to put this in caps lock, and im not trying to be rude.

IF YOU DO NOT PAY FOR VZW, YOU DO NOT GET GPS.

again, IF YOU DO NOT PAY $10/MONTH FOR VZ NAVIGATOR, YOU DO NOT GET ANY GPY SERVICES.

You shouldn't talk to people idiots especially when you're the one who is wrong. you just need to change you gps settings from e911 to location on...... and guess what..... the gps works with blackberry maps and 3rd party apps too.

Did you get all that or should I put it all in caps?

Maybe I should put it in all caps:

IF YOU ENABLE THE GPS FROM "E911" TO "LOCATION ON" IN THE OPTIONS MENU, THEN THE GPS WILL WORK AND YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR VERIZON NAVIGATOR. I KNOW THIS BECAUSE THAT'S HOW I HAVE MY OWN STORM SET UP.

i appologize, when i tried the gps on the storm when they first came out, and in sw fla we were having bb internet problems, the internet icon would not show up, emails could not be set up, ect. that was the last time i tried the gps w/o vz nav, so it must have been the network issues, because the gps was on.

again, im sorry

After this post, I did a search with the word
"GPS" in these forums.
It appears the GPS is enabled out of the box.
But if you want VZ Navigator you have to pay.
The built in Maps app and the built in standalone GPS chips work out of the box with no extra fee's.

But if you want to use VZ Navigator you need to pay the monthly fee from Verizon.

On friday I will be able to answer these questions first hand as I will be buying a Storm.

You are correct:
-GPS is enabled out of the box

-The Storm comes with its own map software that uses GPS satellites (I just did this several times over the last few days on vacation)

-GPS on my unit was turned off initially by default. To turn on go to Options/Advanced options/GPS. Make sure you are off of the "E911 only" option and ena...

OK, so your GPS and BB Maps worked out of the box. My next question would be.
When you used your BBMaps and GPS did you have VZ Navigator turned on for your cell phone account?

If you are NOT paying for VZ Navigator, and
your BB Maps/Google Maps are working with the GPS then thats a confirmed case of it working.

Without having to pay verizon. And they dont lock down a hardware capability if you dont pay for VZ Navigator. Theres been a bit of confusion about this as you can see from the rest of this post.

Thanks

I don't have VZ Navigator installed on mine and I haven't used it. I hear great things about it for the most part, but I don't want to pay for it.

To help clear up some of the confusion, I believe that the Blackberry Storm is the first device from Verizon that came with the GPS capabilities unlocked. One huge complaint many have against Verizon is that they have been "crippling" such features as GPS on all their phones so we would have to pay for their services. I have heard from others talkning about it on phonescoop that this will no longer be the case going forward 😁

The Curve's GPS can be unlocked if you update its software to 4.5 and VZW is promising to unlock WinMo phones sometime early this year.

i just wanted to make sure john saw this.

again, im sorry. when i tried the gps on my friends storm, it was when they first came out and in sw fla we were having major bb outages. i did enable the gps and it didnt do anything. i tried it today and it worked fine.

so again, to john and all the others, im sorry.

on a lighter note, thanks for correcting me.

a wise person once said something like 'we should be happy to be proven wrong, because it means new knowledge is being created' or something like that, so thanks 🙂

No problem.
(group hug)

Well anyone who reads the thread will now know a lot about the GPS stuff. Together we saved a lot of people money and aggravation trying to figure it all out.

BTW- I'm still loving my Storm.
Im totally keeping it. I cant believe how much better than WinMo the BB O/S is, it just works so nicely.

Looks like I'm not even running the latest leaked firmware.

i believe your running the current official version.

note: i found this out the other day from my regional manager, and im sure most already knew, but the leaked software (the unofficial, like .90) voids the manufactures warranty.

although, most of us dont care and would just flash back to the current sw version.

I hear ya, If I was calling for any kind of warranty support it would be for a hardware issue or broken part.
Most likely I would flash it back to .75 before sending it in.

They say it would void warranty, but I think they would stand behind this little loophole if you kept calling for support on the software side and they found you were running .90
In which case they would be right.
But it shouldnt void the hardware warranty.
A firmware update cant cause a screen to crack.

In the desktop or laptop world. If you call dell and you have windows vista installed but they sold it to you with Windows XP, if you called with problems they could tell you they dont support it.

I guess the makers need to draw a line where they will support...

I am torn on my favorite:
Most everything works on .75, but it's so slow compared to the newer ones, but the newer ones have some real quirks!

Speed vs. living with a few quirks for a while...hmmm 😕

I guess my favorite would be the next unreleased OS 🤣
