Push mail vs pull mail

This may come as some surprise to some people but I had a Treo 600 from AT&T Wireless and after one locked up and the replacement unit (AT&T was very nice about replacing it) only downloaded "some" of the messages on my server (I watched at my desktop, repeatedly), I called Palm and got a level 5 senior senior tech and he said if I want reliable email with the Treo to drop AT&T and go to VZW. He said the job they did with it is superb, and that any talk about CDMA not being as good as GSM for data was only because Sprint used to be the only ones with CDMA and their network was not on a par with VZW.

However, it seems the VZW version of the Treo is very different than the others. VZW customized it substantially -- no SIM card, for instance...

I personally prefer the push email, although, if I'm not mistaken, you can configure the sync on the Treo to not automatically push email.

glazerman,

Thanks for the reply. Please help me understand better.

If you prefer push, why are you using POP?

What POP client do you use and/or recommend?

Do you know if you can have both installed at once and switch smoothly back and forth as desired, or if there's any issues with having both installed at the same time or with needing to be uninstalling one before installing the other?

Thanks!

My main email is through a POP server. I have that automatically pushing mail to the TREO. My hospital uses a proprietary email client, that I can't access externally. They don't use Exchange server. Hope this explains things better.

The good news is that yes, you can select Push using the Sync 2.0 software that Verizon is now providing or you can turn it off and get it only when you want (pull).

I will say that we have been using the Sync 2.0 and am having some difficulties getting it to work consistantly. We are also having trouble getting attachments to come across.
The "push" is sort of misleading as what actually happens is that you set a parameter on the Treo as to how often you want to sync. It then does a behind the scenes "pull", thus appearing as though it's a push. During the sync, you can't do anything else on the device, though it usually only takes a minute or so to complete.

I am also told by Verizon that they are testing a replacement of t...
