Audiovox over the long haul?
I'm seriously considering the 9900. However, since Audiovox made their recent announcement that they are getting out of the cellular market, I'm concerned about the long haul. Sure, Verizon will provide technical support, but what do you think about the future of firmware/software updates? Anyone have REAL info as to whether Verizon deals directly with Toshiba (the actual manufacturer) or only with Audiovox?

Part of the spin off of any business to another entity involved the transfer of obligations and/or responsibilities. I was 10 years ago involved in the spares and repairs section of a Defense Electronics Business spun off to Huges Howard. Airline Customers using our Inertial Navigation Systems had no problem with our equipment being repaired by the gaining corporation.
I do not believe you will have any service-ability repair problem with your Toshiba built Audiovox CDM-9900. Usually any software updates are out by the end of the first year. The phones come with a year warranty. Hope my optimism helps.

Thanks Airwar. I too was with an Inertial Navigation System manufacturer (Kearfott Guidance & Navigation). We also were spun off back in the early 90's. What remains of the old company is probably still supporting old hardware and software, even though they are down to about 8% of their original workforce.

We were Delco Electronics, and produced the Apollo & Titan INS Guidance, Carousel-IV INS, as well as PMS, and F-16's Fire Control Systems, Satellite Inertial Upper Stage, the C-17's MADAR and F-16's LANTERN. We were involved in all of the Ballistic Missile Programs. Now it's all part of the Cold War's past.
