cdm 9500 vs 9900: on reception

I've had the 9900 for c. 2 weeks and I think it's a terrific phone. It replaced my 9500, a GREAT phone (as far as reception goes). I would give the 9500 a 10 for reception and the 9900 about a 9.5. Any comments?

Why are you marking the 9900 down .5?

I think the only reason is that on my road into town there is one patch where I used to lose calls with phones before I got the 9500. The 9500 almost never lost a call, there or anywhere. A few times, over the three weeks that I've had the 9900, the phone dropped a call in that bad patch. Other than that, the reception has equalled the 9500.

Have you tried forcing it to a different mode on that strech?

No - I haven't paid attention to the discussions here about that. Is there a reference in the manual to this?
And thanks for the suggestion.

You're welcome.

I doubt if it's in the manual. You have to use Field Test and Programming mode. TheMrBillShow wrote a good post about this. Here's a link:

Once in the Debug Menu, choose 3-Pref Mode.
I'm not sure which setting would be best. You could try them and see which works there.

Tom:
I appreciate your staying with me on this. I guess I could get it to work, but what about:

1) consequences - TMBS gave a Caution. And I have used the settings given by MobileWeb4u (which works great, by the way), so I'm not sure it's worth the trouble to switch the settings back and forth for a 1 mile problem.

2) how long does the phone stay "forced" into analog (or digital)?

Also, I live outside of Chapel Hill, NC out in the country, so I'm guessing that the patch where the signal seems to be weak is a function of being between towers or some such thing.

Re: 1) TMBS is da man. He's right- be careful and write things down.

I've gone into Field/Test and looked around. The only thing that I've changed there has been the Pref. Mode.

Do NOT click 'Reset WAP' under Settings! You can read other posts here as to why.

Re: 2) It stays at the new Pref. setting until you change it or until you update the PRL (*22😎. I've been leaving mine set at Cellular Only while at home in San Diego.

The dropped calls could be due to the 9900 picking up analog also. Is the 9500 digital only? There might be a way in the normal menu to make one call as analog only.

You know what - here in NC it's 12:40 - thanks for your attention on this, but I'm getting tired and will look into it tomorrow.
All the best ...
