Hello,
Do I need to have internet enabled on the v400 if it is hooked up to a laptop via a USB cord? I want to be able to connect to the internet on my laptop through the phone. Is this possible? (i.e. Use the phone as a modem)

I just got the phone today. So far I like it, except for the buttons on the outside. I keep hitting them. Is there a way to turn them off

Thanks,
me

Once you have MPT installed you can use your phone as a modem through the data cable. So you don't need internet service through you cellphone service provider as long as you have some sort of dialup internet access. I used Netzero through mine for a bit when my cable internet was down.

The only thing is, don't expect a fast internet connection. I found it to be slow as molasses. That's even compared to regular 56k modem access. Maybe you'll have better luck with yours.

As for your other question, I don't know about that. Anyone else?
If all else fails you might search on HowardForums for that info at http://www.howardforums.com/forumdisplay.php? s=392848391332f130dcd289825199e635&forumid=38

Yeah, I've heard that the internet connection is like a 14.4k connection.
Thanks for the info. That is what I needed to know. 🙂

I've run a few speedtests on the connection with 2 different ISPs. Seems to be in the 8k to 10k range.

Hey Brettflan-
What settings did you use when setting up MPT to use as a dialup modem? I just set this up last night on my laptop and the only way I was able to get it to work was using GPRS which is much faster, but I believe that will cost me $3.99/month PLUS per kb downloaded... something I REALLY don't want to pay to check my email.

FETNU,

For me it was as simple as creating a new dial-up connection and selecting "Motorola V. and Timeport Modem COM4" as the modem. Although I hook up to the phone via USB port & cable it is also recognized as COM4.

I have not disabled the GPRS, I have the symbol showing on the screen but using the phone as analog modem seems to work OK. I have Cingular account, I am not quite sure if GPRS is activated by default.

Actually once you've got the MPT drivers installed properly, you don't even need to run MPT to be able to use your phone as a modem. Just connect the phone and let Windows set up the drivers again. Like Japi said, just set up your internet service then to use the modem driver for your phone (mine shows up as "Motorola USB Modem #3"). It doesn't use GPRS that way either. I've got GPRS internet on my phone, but I watched it as it connected using the above method and the GPRS symbol never showed up on the outer LCD while it did show as dialing out and then being connected.
In case you're curious it's NetZero I was using through my phone. And truly, the term "slow" doesn't quite cover how bad the transfer speed is. But, on the upside, it does w...

I have been looking for a way to disable the outside buttons as well. The best I have found is Menu>Settings>Security>Lock Application>[1234]>Ring Styles>Change>Locked>Select. This will require you to enter your security code if you press the outside volume buttons accidentally. But at least it keeps your phone from changing to Silent by accident.
