I've been off of phone scoop for quite some time now... ever since getting my v710 last August (on the first day it came out)

All of the news I'm now reading on the pending litigation and the replacement 815 is new to me.

I have a few questions:

1. What are the differences between the v710 and the v815. They look identical from the pictures - but surely there must be diffs.

2. I bought my v710 on the first day it was available last August. I got the rebate, but still have all of my paperwork. I've also traded the phone in for 2 new ones (my first one had a VERY low ear piece volume. My second one crashed a lot and also would sometimes cut-out all together ont the ear piece. Unfortunately - the third one I now have still doe...

i think the only REAL difference besides cosmetics is the VCAST. Be careful though, one thing the 815 does not have is analog.
if you travel or live away from the city, you may not get digital signals and your 710 would fall over to analog, where the 815 might not.

according to reports i have seen, because you bought your 710 before the beginning of the year, you are able to get a refund.
i think there are three options: $25 VZW credit, return phone for what you paid and get a new phone, return phone for what you paid and cancel service w/ no early cancellation charge. of course, i am not believing any of this until i see it...mainly because i have seen it posted on a forum and i tend not to believe everything i read there.

i have...

Great info - thanks.
I'll DEFINITELY not switch to the 815 if it doesn't have Analog... I find that it's good to have in a pinch.

So - as I mentioned - this is my third 710 - but I don't know if the firmware is any different. What's the latest version?
my phone says I have: 8700_01.308F
Is that the latest?

Also - fyi about the crashing.
I find it usually happens when I have the phone on "vibrate only"
The problem will start when I go to make a call. I hold the phone to my ear and don't hear any ringing. Then I look and the screen says it's "connected" - but there is nothing coming from the speaker. I've tested it during this state by calling my home phone and leaving a message (I can't hear anything - so I don't know when my ...

Think of the V710 as a collectors item, if you bought it before 2/1/2005 and you can hold out until September.

You might get an E815 plus cash, or at least credit to what you want from VZW, including ETF.

Look at the posts here,in the Verizon forum and on the Net:

Hi, I don't know if anyone has told you yet, but the newest software on the v710 should read 8700_01.40.OR The number you stated seems to be the old software which had many glitches as you found out. If you upgrade to the new firmware or replace your phone with a new 710 that has the software I mentiuoned above you will be very satisfied. Ear piece volume is great as is the speakerphone and ringer volume, and the phone has yet to crash on me in anyway. As for wondering if there are any better phones right now well, for Verizon and if you are like me and don't need a PDA phone then I would say the V710 is the best right now. The E815 isn't enough of an upgraded phone to be considered a better phone, and in some aspects it's actually a dow...

Another downside to this phone is that fact that you can no longer access the "Dial Up Network". I used my V710 to connect to my Zire72 for the web and e-mail with attachments. My PDA would dial the #777 number and get me on line. With the new phone you can do that. At the same time, some of the newer features are pretty cool. I love the update to voice dialing. The camera is a nice improvement. The outside display shows the same picture you have on your wallpaper when the phone is open, which is another cool feature. Plus if you live in a VCast area, that is a nice addition.
