Can EV-DO be used without the data plan?

Hello!

If I have the America's Choice plan and an LG VX-8000, will I be able to use the EV-DO to connect my laptop to the Internet on occasion without purchasing a data plan? I would only need to do so maybe once a month for up to an hour, so I do not need to waste money on the $80/month unlimited plan.

Basically, I just wanted to know if the VX-8000 could be used occasionally instead of plunking down $80./month and rarely using it.

You are correct. I am planning for the future. You wouldn't happen to know the answer, would you?

No, I don't believe you will be able to, but I'm not a sales rep, so it's possible, but unlikely.

I think any VZW phone has one ESN, to which can be assigned either an America's Choice plan or else an Unlimited NationalAccess/BroadbandAccess plan but not both because the Unlimited NationalAccess/BroadbandAccess plan requires its own phone number and therefore its own ESN. If you had the VX8000 and the America's Choice plan, then VZW might charge an additional monthly fee for BroadbandAccess or otherwise limit the phone to NationalAccess.

I don't know; I am only guessing. Some posters are doubtful that VZW will allow MOU (minutes only use) of BroadbandAccess as is currently allowed for NationalAccess.

I had a misplaced wild hair last night and called CS. They told me you could just use it and take from your minutes, which would work perfectly for me. I have no need for unlimited access, since I bounce from client to client most of the day (network consulting, free Internet access to check mail).

I have only had a few times when I could have used that type of access to hook up my laptop while on the road.

I hope her statement holds true!
