CCD vs CMOS: From what I understand, the difference in performance of CCD vs CMOS for this application shouldn't be a big deal. Here's a decent link that talks about the technologies:

My take is that the CMOS tends to require more electronics at the pixel level, so the pixels are smaller relative to their center-to-center spacing, therefor they gather less light, and integration (exposure) times must be higher. So the CCD *might* perform better in low light when compared to the same size detector with the same pixel count.
Lens/focus: The thing that make me skeptical about these photos is the mac...

I just read the thread in howards and I guess I have to take back some of what I said before.. although the ccd vs cmos is still legit. I think the lens and detector format are more important than ccd vs cmos, but that doesn't mean the 8000's camera isn't better.
