Regular Volume (non-speaker) and Speaker volume

I'm confused on something about the mic's volume (non-speaker). I turned it up all the way and it didn't appear to get the same max volume I get on my old LG 510. When I used the speaker phone on the VX6100 it was great and I didn't need to adjust the volume.

Note: I do use hearing aides (they have volume control), but I have to be careful with feedback (setting aides too high). I do have the option of my aide's t-coil (cuts out all background noise and only hear stuff over the phone) and it worked great. Which is a huge advantage in loud places like airports.

So, why is the speakerphone better than the volume on the phone's regular mic?

Please disregard my question.

The phone was longer than my LG 510, so I just wasn't getting the receiver (not mic) in the right position for my behind the ear hearing aides. I don't know why I was having a hard time getting it over my aides' mic except that the phone is longer and a slightly different form factor.
