I will be switching to Verizon from Cingular. Could someone tell me the function of *228 and how is it used?

It is used to update the roaming capabilities on your phone. Tells is what to display, ie: Verizon Wireless, Extended Network, or roaming. That way you know if you are actually roaming on another carriers network, or using one that Verizon has contracts with to not charge you roaming fees. They recomend you update (*228, option 2) your PRL (preferred roaming list) every few months, I usually do it any time that I am planning on traveling.
