Motorola RAZR V3
Unlocking the V3
cingnashsales said:
If you get a phone from Cingular you can guarantee it is locked! As far as defeating the purpose of haveing a world phone locked, it's bussiness! We have international roaming agreements with most major carriers around the world therefore giveing you functionality in most countries.
In that case, Cingular will NOT be getting my business!
I "had" looked forward to purchasing the RAZR V3 and leaving Verizon behind after the V710 fiasco. Now this thread has me rethinking that apparently "flawed" decision...
I had wanted to sign-up with Cingular for 3 reasons:
1) To purchase the RAZR V3;
2) To get a better rate plan than what I currently had with Verizon;
3) To be abl...

2nd- Cingular offers more minutes than VZW PLUS rollover.
3rd- You get what you pay for.

First, others have posted on these forums that Cingular has always sold their phones unlocked... Maybe that was a B.S. post, but it has been posted.
Second, here is my plan, let's see Cingular match it:
800 Anytime minutes
1000 Mobile-to-mobile minutes
Unlimited nights & weekends starting @ 8 p.m.
Toll-free nationwide long-distance
$45 per month
Aside from mentioning that Verizon has what is universally regarded as the best network in the U.S., what price does Cingular charge to match the above? About $67 per month last ti...

Just because someone says their phones are sold unlocked doesn't make it true. Why don't you try researching these things on your own first.
I come in here to do my research. I read the forums. I am not the only one who read that. Look at this original thread. I believe the original post was shocked as I was. Others have posted that too...
cheers,
kega
I posted that question in the Cingular forum & found out that Cingular did indeed used to sell their world phones unlocked.
They stopped it after they put into place some international roaming agreements so now they can lock the phone to them & charge for roaming overseas where they couldn't do that before...
IMHO, this does validate what I said about them earlier... They are getting greedy!
You can check out the thread in the Cingular forum if you like...

I live in Louisiana and i have been a Cingular customer for 5 years. I have also worked outside the US since 2000. Before Cingular went GSM, i had to keep 2 phones, one for the US and one from the UK. While I still have the UK fone (some countries, cingular has no agreements) Cingular works fine in most places i go. I have worldwide roaming and i have YET to be charged extra for it. even phoning home from Europe only costs me minutes. (i still dont believe that myself) but true.
i have also bought GSM fones from cingular for several friends in europe and africa and they function fine.
I do agree with you about the price of the V3. I dont want to pay that price eithe. although I probably will. what is important to know is that...

Like I said in the original post though, it was a combination of ALL 3 things that have pushed me to the edge. Everyone seems to have just picked out the "price" gripe & focused on that...
Well, not entirely true. They said at first that I was wrong about the "unlocked" part but now I got people in the Cingular forum saying that Cingular phones used to be unlocked & they kinda dropped that one like a hot potato. Also, I noticed that people in here are claiming they have the phone & that it is unlocked... So what do I believe on that issue? I dunno what to believe now...
Anyways, tha...

as for unlocking...i have no idea yet, although i have a good friend who is area sales mgr with cingular. he has not gotten his V3 yet but he will give me honest answers and i will post. you can get unlocking software and cable from UNLOCKITNOW.com
29.99.
more to come.
Ok, here goes. First off, straight from my Cingular Rep. Cingular phones have previously been unlocked. The shipments I am recieving are still unlocked, so there's no evidence as to when this policy will be placed in effect. Post merger ALL Cingular phones are to be SIM locked. Cingular doesn't state a reason for this, it is ASSUMED that they are planning to take advantage of thier extensive European/African roaming agreements. As for the claim that they've decided to charge their c...

I've been following the forum from the first announcement, too. I've read every post. I actually found $500 to be LESS that I thought it was going to be, based on the info you an others provided.
Kega, I'm not flaming you either, but I do want you to find another forum. The is the V3 forum. You've clearly articulated your position. Even if it's unlocked, it still doesn't have the features you want at a price you're willing to pay. Even if it did, you still woun't get as good a rate plan than your grandfathered VZW plan....

I expressed a polite & valid opinion. Others, because they were bored, decided to flame me. Check out the Cingular forum if you don't believe me. Also, please do not misquote me... I do not recall expressing an opinion on price before now. Maybe I have forgotten, but I don't think so... Anyways, my post was about more than just price. What about the other things I mentioned???
Also, see this post for what I believe this forum is about, certainly, it is not about censorship.

I'm not trying to censor you, I'm asking you, politely (with appropriate emoticons to make sure you don't misinterpret my intent) to move on. Your point has been made, ad nauseum.
🙂
I will continue to post comments in this forum. That is what it is for. 🙂
If somehow my well-intended posts offend you, may I suggest that you take your own advice and please do not read them & move on. 🙂
That is what I do with posts that were not specifically directed at me AND that I don't agree with.

I have a V3, so I have an interest in the things people are finding out about their phones. Aslo, since I have one of the first customer V3s, I'm trying to answer other people's questions.
But, with your restating your views over and over and knocking a phone and a company people are passionate about, you're creating a lot of "noise," causing people to skip posts in the interest of time.
Again, you're entitled to your opinion, you feel your comments are relevant to others, I (and others) don't. But do as you will. Just don't be surprised if people flame you, you're asking for that treatemnt, whether you're willing to admit it or not.
I'm done. I won't reply to a...

bbbsport,
Like you, I agree that this has gone on way too long, and I too want to bow out of it.
However, note that you said I am "asking for it". That I strongly disagree with.
First off, who decides that a post deserves to be flamed? What standards are there that such & such a post deserves to be flamed? That is an irresponsible statement on your part.
My first post was polite & attacked no one in here, mer...

Thank you for your thoughtful post. I was hoping people would take it the way you did & respond with some useful info as you did. I truly appreciate that. Thanks.
I guess my original post was not to complain about 1 thing, but that several things were adding up to frustrate me.
I was truly looking forward to getting this phone & switching to Cingular. Now, I am pretty disappointed with the whole process. The only place one can express oneself & pray/hope that the company (Cingular) might even have the slightest chance of taking notice is here... Thus, my original post.
What is disappointing is that some Cingular reps who posted how bored they were in the Cingular forum came in here & decided to "flame" me becaus...

Do you consider a Cingular branded phone tied to a cingular contract a Cingular phone? If yes then you are dead wrong.
I bought an MPX220 (actually 3 of them) from Best Buy and they are all unlocked. of course the volume is for sh*t and the phones have more bugs in the OS than a trailer park ho has in her undies before laundry day but why should that get me down....
more bars in more places and more happy compliant smiling faces.... Please!

So Cingular phones are unlocked??? I am hearing strong opinions from both sides now... Some people are "adamant" that they are locked. Some people are saying they own them and they are NOT locked...
How can I determine for sure before buying one???
Thanks all for replyin...

I have done comparisons using the Phonescoop phone finder on here extensively. It doesn't have much other than it's thin, its looks and bluetooth.

so what kind of a phone are you looking for it sounds like you want a PDA that can to everything but not pay much for it?
The V710, if Verizon hadn't crippled the bluetooth.
The Nokia 6255i, has many more features than the V3, but not out yet.
The MPx220 if voice-dialing worked thru a bluetooth headset (it doesn't).
The V551 fits the bill. It is only $150(???) I think...
So basically, the V3 has less features than a very similiar phone (the V551) and the only difference is appearance & thinness. $350 more for that? You don't see that? Seriously?
Aside from whether it is worth it or not, do you not see that you are paying several hundred dollars more for a very thin phon...

My only complaint is that it has a camera. I already have a fantastic digital camera, so why do I need a phone that has a camera. I think it's a complete waste.

i also dont believe the v3 is wurth the price .. i think its a prettier v400 or v600 .. i made the mistake of leaving SE for a moto v400 phone kuz i wanted a flip.. it was a mistake ill live with.. some will by the phone and some wont i agree with that.. but one thing some people have to realize is when u buy this phone u are buying it first kuz it looks good.. just like when u go to a restuarant to get dinner.. u buy the food first in a menu only on looks alone.. lol **** life is that way.. so everyone saying its to costly phone is right but that can be lived with kuz its a hoot looking phone on he outside..
I hear ya! Personally, I was willing to live with the price and the "lesser" ...

The V3 is well worth the $500.
Get over it.
Even "if" it was, I don't think I can live with a plan that offers LESS minutes for MORE money...
That was part of my original post too. That, and that Cingular is now locking their world phones...
It wasn't "one" thing driving my views, it was all 3 things in my original post taken together...
cheers,
kega
Again, are you a Cingular employee?
My original post was a fair observation & you seem kinda defensive, especially since it wasn't directed at you...
cheers,

The V551 is a nice phone, but for me, it was a bit too heavy, the talk time is too low, it only has 65000 colors for the display, plus, it's only available from Best Buy, and my company's cingular rep cannot get it.
That makes sense.
I'm not defensive, but your so called outrage at the price should have occurred to you, as you've been looking forward to it for so long.
I'm not trying to defend this phone. I'm just saying "No sh!t it's $599.99. What did you expect?"
they are trying to buy a #1 slot and it is transparent as hell.
and extra double whammy with ripe cheese on motorola for trying to propagate this phone at such a price. wouldn't be so friggin offensive if they offered a good RF and volume phone at a reasonable price point....
take your flames people and toast your own marshmallows.
1. All Motorola World Phones (v400/v600, V180 and V220) are indeed UNLOCKED. That's right, they're unlocked. So I'm sure the the V3 and the V551 are going to be unlocked. I even went to a T-Mobile store the other day and a guy there told me he activated them when the customer bought them overseas with Orange or Vodaphone, brought it to T-Mobile here in the US, and activated it with no problem.
2. As much as I despise them, Sony-Ericsson world phones are also unlocked.
3. Nokias are locked. However this doesn't pose a major problem with me, given the fact I have a program to unlock them....

Others, because they were "bored" (and posted so in the Cingular forum) came in here looking for trouble. I was not trying to start trouble, just posting a reasonable opinion.
