people can send me SMS chat messages
I can't resume an SMS chat without them sending me another message.
I checked the pdf manual
the manual said to go into "Office Tools" and select "chat"
there is no such heading in the "Office Tools" menu
wtf?

its under Settings->Tools->Chat . I'm assuming "office tools" was a typo.
