DUN with Windows XP

Mountain

Has anybody got DUN working with Windows XP? When I try to connect using the "Connect to the Internet" button on Nokia PC Suite, it gets to "Verifying username and passoword..." then says "One Touch Access failed to establish a network connection. Please check the connection settings." When I check the connection settings, should I configure the connection manually? What is my:

Access Point? (MEdia Net?)
Username?
Password?

Is there another way to do it without PC Suite by just setting up a network connection in XP?

Help!

Thanks,
Mountain

I would have it set automaticlly, not manual.

Mine has worked smoothly since setting up.

I tried the automatic setting, and that didn't work either. When it says "select your network operator from the list" did you chose "Cingular USA"? Did you install any drivers first? Are you connecting with USB or Bluetooth? It seems to fail when checking a username and password, but I don't have a username and password. I am stuck.

user should be WAP@CINGUALRGPRS.COM and the pw is CINGULAR1, it must be in all caps.

Sorry aprout to keep bothering you. Your username and password seemed to work. Now I get to "Registering your computer on the network" followed by the error "Error 734 The PPP link control protocol was terminated." Do you and anyone out there know how to get rid of that?

Thanks again!

This was one area of the phone I had never used, even with my 6620 that now sits on my desk here and is not being used. (Maybe I should try and sell it??) Anyway, my DSL was out last night, so I figured it was the perfect time to try. I'm not really sure if I could explain to someone how to do it, but I got it to work for me, both via BT and the cable. Connected at 115.2kbps according to the little monitors in my task bar. Did a speed test at toast.net and with the cable I got 150kbps so I was somewhat impressed. Initially it took me playing around with certain things (that is why I say I don't know if I could explain it to someone) but I think I have figured out how to get it to work for me.

I could be very wrong about this, but I think in someway, some form, you have to have it dial *99#. Man if I was as thoroughly knowledgeable about this as I am most other aspect of this phone, I would gladly help you. I think me getting mine to work was pure luck to be honest with you.

Thanks for trying Icyhot. Can you tell me whether you are connecting via PC suite or using the connection manager in XP? Using the connection manager, I am dialing *99#, logging in with username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM and password: CINGULAR1, then, after it authenticates me, I get the error message "Error 734 The PPP link control protocol was terminated" when it trys to register me on the network. The possible solutions to this error from the Microsoft knowledgebase (thanks aprout) do not work. Very frustrating!

Do you think the Cingular people would have any clue as to how to solve this? Is it worth calling them?

Try using the connection manager instead of pc suite and user name to be ISP@CINGULARGPRS.COM

Try changing WAP to ISP.

Try changing the number that dial to: *99***1#

I tried both WAP and ISP in the username and *99# and *99***1# and still get the same error message. I called Cingular, and they told me I need to have a data plan (I currently only have unlimited MediaNet) to make the connection. Do you guys who have DUN working all have a data plan?

I have media net. So you had ISP@CINGULARGPRS.COM as username and CINGULAR1 as password, and you dialed *99# and it still didn't work?

Yes...I even tried it again cutting and pasting the username and password from your post...no go. I am using the USB connection so there is no complications due to Bluetooth.

One post I found suggested looking at the following:
Control Panel->Phone and Modem Options->Modems->properties->Advanced at the extra initialization commands. Mine is set to:
AT+CGDCONT=,,"ISP.CINGULAR"
What is yours?

I knew that I did not need a data plan, but now I am going to get no help from Cingular.

When I went to control panel and followed your steps, mine is the same. Now when I connected BT, I used pc suite. But when I used cable, I did the connection manager. On the pc suite, what are the selectable devices you can use to connect??
