3G SIM........................CAUTION!!!!!!!!!!!!
The 3G SIM is "BLUE" in color on the front of the sim, it'll say "3G" on it in the blue color........ I have noticed, at least in my area, that this sim "negatively" impacts reception/signal strength in certain areas where the older 64k (regional) card had better signal and reception...... When I let someone give me a 3G sim, my signal strength was cut in 1/2 to "NO SIGNAL" in these areas..... I got my hands on another regional 64K sim (cingular network is actually 3 networks 310 west region, 170 cenral region 150 eastern region), and the signal went back to what I was used to seeing.... so before you upgrade to the new 3G SIM, you may want to investigate this with one of your buddies SIMS......put it in your phone and see if the above holds...

Prior to the 64k Sims.....this was an option on the 1/2 dozen or more phones I have.......that option is not available (at least here in the western market), you don't have the ability to select networks......
I used to use it with the 32k sims quite a bit, around where I live they have an AT&T & a Cingular tower, before they started integrating the network with the 410 designation, I could select the cingular tower and get better reception during the day, at night I would switch to the AT&T network for better reception.......................alas, the times they are a changing.............
But if it still works in YOUR area, consider yourself lucky...

It shouldn't depend on the network. Just the sim. I'm in rainy california..

The sim, dictates what "network" is your home network, along with the credentials that allow you to use the network. Cingular is made of "4" networks, 310 (western) 170 (centeral) 150 (eastern) & 0380 (AT&T's)......the ability to change networks is set by the carrier via an update to the sim, in most cases (64k sim) you won't be allowed to manually select the network, the ability is on the phone, but is removed when the sim updates on the network.
So YES.....IT DOES depend on the network....
Keep in mind, not all networks, have been fully updated.....and there MAY BE some who still have the ability to change networks, even with the 64k sim, but you'll see that going away too....
Cingular, by the 3rd or 4th qtr, this year, will be ON...

You could be correct with all the program changes that are going on, it's quite possible they redesignated some parts of the networks....
As little as 2 months ago, we were still being told the Cingular network was actually 4 networks, desigated by 310, 150, 170 (each region west/central/east had their own home designator) & 0380 (AT&T's network), we were told also that an initiative had been undertaken to make the "whole" network, coast to coast, ONE NETWORK, designated 410...
Part of the reason given, it takes to long for the phones to check the access lists to verify if they have permission to use the towers, etc if they only have to search ONE designator, it simplifies things......possibly some parts of networks were redesignated ...
