A very good phone

I've only had this phone for a few days now, but I like it a lot. It's much better than the Samsung SPH A460 I had before. Signal strength is very good, even in hotel stairways and elevators. Some pros/cons:

Pros:

Solid construction; rubber coating prevents scratching other things and the phone itself. Keeps it from sliding around too.

Big, clear, colorful display.

Speakerphone is plenty loud enough for me, very convenient.

Very quick wireless web access.

"Auto-complete" for entering text is handy, and it remembers almost everything you've entered before; very nice when sending texts and adding phone numbers with people whose last names are the same.

Charger that locks into the phone.

Cons:

Menus can be confusing at first, but doesn't take long to get used to if you play with it for a little while or actually READ the manual.

Ring "themes" change out your ringtone if you change the theme; don't like that.

Vibrates then rings, but not both at once (minor nit-pick, but one that bugs me)

Like I said, a very good phone. My minor nit-picks are the only thing that kept me from giving a 5.0 rating.

I would rate this phone a 5 but the user manual stinks. I am usually good at figuring out techincal "stuff", but this phone isn't so user friendly. Other than that, I love this phone! The outside is durable. The phone feels sturdy, unlike the samsung x427 I had.
In my opinion, you get a phone to use as a phone. Not as a camera or for internet. Many of you are complaining about the internet being slow (remember it is a phone!) maybe you should get a sidekick or better yet a PC. Those of you who think the video camera is "choppy" or the photo quality is poor, you should get a digital camera. The camera works great for quick photos on the go.
I wish that the phone had come with more ringtones, but i can download more.
I hope I continue to find good things about this phone!

V551 Users BEWARE

I recently bought the V551 through Cingular. I like many other read the reviews and it should have been a great phone. BUT, Here is a very disturbing thing I happened to notice with it and it's replacement and according to Cingular it is a normal thing to happen ???. Try placing your phone while on standby place it next a radio that is turned off, and you get sounds coming out of the speaker it happens every so often 20 to 30 min or so but not on a regular basis, it happens on my computer and car radio also. What can this signal do to your brain ????.
Pros: Nice looking, good Vid, Phone-book and other features easy to find and use.
Cons: Weird signals, so many dropped calls in solid signal that I could not even talk to customer service with both units ( or was it my bad to get 2 Bad units.

WHAT WASTE OF MOTOROLA'S TIME

Motorola made the v551 and they made about 8 phones just like it. The v330 or v300 is the same exact thing. They all have the same problems and the same feature so what's the point of making all those phones if there is no point. Same thing right? Motorola has so many problems they have to improve while they make all those phones they can figure out ways to slove those problems. The v551 is like the v330 same problem not loud enough and camera is the same thing the quality. While they work on making all those phones whynot try to fix up the quality of the camera or making the phone ringers a little louder?

nice phone, i admit. :) i was actually on verizon before i had to switch to cingular (very abruptly, too) and when i walked into a cingular store, i had no clue what to get. since i was a fan of motorola, i was torn between the V220 and V551, so i went with my intuition and chose the V551.

(i'm really glad cause after doing lots of research, i realized how different they were.)

i love how its quad-band, clear(er) screen (way better than the V220 and esp. the T7xx phones), bluetooth, edge (even though i don't really use them), nearly 4-5 days on a single charge with just the standard battery, and others.

camera/video quality is not the best, but that's not what phones are for. they're nice to have for certain moments and stuff.

what i didn't like... uh, it's too blue, i think. the front lcd backlight, i think it should be white/clear. and about the actual exterior, i'd rather have it be all silver or something. also for some people, the rubber casing might be a plus, but i'm not a fan. my jeans pockets are sorta small and it's sorta hard to get it in/out...

but overall it's a nice phone. i got it more for its features rather than how it looks, but i guess it looks fine.

V551 Battery Life

I am satisfied with the phone except for the battery life. Charge only seems to last 2 days, is this typical. Should I get a backup battery? Anyone having the same problem, how did you solve it. Thanks

Hey there.. Figured I'd give my 2 cents to this phone as it was here i read about it..

First off, I love my phone. It is a great phone with great features. I'll give a quick list of pros and cons (I know.. how original).

Pro's:

- Heavy (Always know its there)

- The material on outside helps for the phone not sliding around everwhere.

- Great features, love the screen

- Ring tones are great.. (Love Illness)

- Don't know why people complain about phone book, I think it works fine (Scrolling is slower..

Basically, not to go on and on.. everything people like, i do too.

There are a few problems.

1) Charging is a pain. Some times it works, most it doesn't. It says its recharging, but either doesn't charge or says "Unable to Charge". My #1 beef.

2) Phone won't ring some times. I'll have full coverage bars, and all of a sudden, the phone will beep and say new voice mail. Phone never rang and was on ring.

3) Buttons on the side constantly change ring style (Ring, vibrate, ring then vibrate) etc. Very annoying. (Not the problem with #2)

4)No Ring and Vibrate mode

5) Battery life sucks.

The rest of the phone is awesome. -.5 for the battery issue and not ringing. The others you can live with.

Great phone.

(Almost) Restored My Faith In Moto

This phone could have been a 5 if not for my recent experiences with Motorola. Hence, my review may be slightly jaded. Alas, I am actually a Sony Ericsson man at heart. Now, shall we get down to business? The V551 is my 6th phone of 2005 (if you count warranty replacements and exchanges). Speaking matter-of-factly, my V551 was a warranty replacement after 4 (yes, 4!!!!) Siemens S66s.

After horrible experiences with the V400 and the MPx220, I became what is affectionately dubbed in my call center as a "Moto Hater." Let's just say that the V551 has somewhat atoned for Motorola's sins of the past.

Here are some of the PROS: The screen is brilliant, although I do find it somewhat small after owning the Siemens S66 and the MPx220. The speaker phone and the call quality are also great, but those have never been issues of mine with Motorola. Unlike some users, I actually like the blue rubber grip. I am paranoid about scratches on my phones, and this makes me a little more comfortable. The camera is really good for a phone. I'm not expectig Nikon quality here. The menus are also very easy to use (a Moto trademark). There is also more-than-adequate storage space for pictures and ringtones.

Now for the CONS: The screen, although brilliant, is a bit small for my tastes. The design is pretty boring. It's basically a rubber-coated V400. I'm also not a huge fan of Motorola's phonebook style, but that's really a moot point. Durability remains to be seen, but past experiences with Motorola have me slightly skeptical.

In a nutshell, I really like this phone. For the longest time, I wanted a V3 (until my previous experiences scared me away from Motorola altogether. I'm glad that I got the V551 instead. For once, I'm actually optimistic about a (Moto) phone, although I'm still a Sony Ericsson fan.
