Verizon Wireless today announced plans to launch two data-optimized CDMA2000, or 1xEV-DO, trial networks. The first, using Lucent equipment, will launch in the Washington, D.C. area next month. A second test network, using Nortel equipment, will launch in San Diego in June. Verizon is also using Nortel equipment for a live 1xEV-DO demonstration at CTIA Wireless 2002 in Orlando this week. 1xEV-DO is the next step in Verizon's CDMA2000 upgrade path, offering data transmission speeds of up to 2.4 Megabits per second (Mbps).
