Sanyo Invests in CCD, OLED Technology for Phones

Sanyo Electric said today it would spend $380 million over three years to boost production of CCD chips used in camera phones, to 50 million units a month by spring 2004, from 10 million at the end of last year. Sanyo also announced last week that a joint venture with Eastman Kodak would spend $169 million in the next business year to start making a new type of cellphone screen, using OLED technology, which is brighter and thinner than current liquid crystal displays. A decision is expected in the next few months on the roll-out of the first OLED-screen cellphone.
