The Governors Highway Safety Association, citing data from a study by the American Journal of Public Health, may recommend a ban on all cell phone use while driving, even if the driver is using a handsfree device. The study found that fatalities caused by drivers distracted by cell phones climbed 28 percent over three years from 2005 to 2008, to a total of 5,870 deaths. More than 16,000 deaths in car accidents from 2001 to 2007 can be blamed on text messages. Drivers under 20 made up the highest proportion of distracted drivers.

Another Agenda For Control

Just another attempt to control peoples lives by a bunch of yahoos with an agenda. Having a conversation with someone in the passenger seat is no different than on a bluetooth. Hands free should be a law because it leaves both hands free to drive. But suggesting that a hands free conversation should be banned is simply Nazi! I'm sorry for all those who have lost friends and kin to accidents, some of which MAY have involved a driver on a cell phone. The stats listed are somewhat bogus though. It's REALLY hard to prove that a conversation caused the accident, but its convenient to use it as a cause when the driver who was on the phone happens to die in the wreck(especially when it supports an agenda). What do they do, ask them? I agree tha...

I agree, and car stereos with screens will be next.

Distracted driving is dangerous. That's well proven and just plain common sense.

Yes, a conversation with a passenger can be just as distracting and therefore just as dangerous as using a phone. However most people would object to such a law. Fewer...

Studies also find you should ban listening to music...

--having people in the car to talk to
--trying to eat or drink anything
--Heaven forbid you try taking off a jacket
--drive with your kids yelling behind you
--Drive in an area with distracting scenery (or a topless beach)
--Etc.

Cellphones arn't some mystical Evil that somehow cause people to have accidents, they're just another DISTRACTION, one of countless other distractions that exist and that people have every day.

The problem is that people no longer care about these distractions, they'll give into them because they assume that everyone else is paying attention so they don't have to.

Yeah, I've almost been in an accident before because some women pulled out while on a cellphone, but I've also almost been in one when som...

I agree with the ban on texting while driving. The reason being is that you're actually taking your eyes off the road. Talking while driving is another story. I've personally had NO issue talking and driving... I think that it's just another distracti...

We wouldnthave these

Laws if you people could use your phone while driving and not wreck. People are using their phones and wreck into something then this is why we have these laws. Simply put learn how to drive while using a phone and that will be the end.

Society is so stupid. We actually have to have laws making it illegal to drive while drunk because people are stupid enough to not realize that they cant operate the same while sober.

Other countries dont have these issues, maybe because their citizens arnt so stupid.
I agree. It, afterall, took only one employee from a beer factory to get into an accident on the way home from work to have said factory no longer offer free beer to employees on shift. One accident in it's some 15 or 20 year history of offering that ...

Take it down to the lowest level.

Like since we are so stupid to save a life speed limit is 10 MPH.

Take our radios and all the other stuff so no distraction. Seats for one so no others....

Where will it end????????

May as well put in a voice irritant

They might as well put irritants in vehicles that prevent people from talking, because an individual TALKING on a handsfree headset is no different than talking to someone in the car. Or maybe...maybe they should ban the sale of phones to people under 21...hmmm...
Of course the answer is more govt regulation, instead of people just being smarter about what they're doing. It's simply Darwinism at work.

Well it seems someone has figured out that they are in danger out on the open road in this country that thinks of driving as a time to multitask as many things as possible into the wasted time traveling from point A to point B.

Just hire someone to drive for you like us lawmaker do...

Honestly guys, I don't understand why you can just hire someone to drive your vehicles for you! Thats what we do!

The advantages include being able to talk on your cell phone, browse the web on your new laptop and even keep yourself occupied with your favorite female escort!

Oh wait, you guys actually work for your money and can't blow it like us? Oh well. Laws like this don't effect us anyway.

enjoy not dying.
