Facebook Building Unified Platform Across All Smartphones

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg today announced a new horizontal platform concept for Facebook apps and the Facebook site on the mobile Web. The new concept will offer a single sign-on point for phones, so that a user can sign into a Facebook account, and then other apps on the phone will be able to use the Facebook account to avoid multiple sign-ons for each application. For instance, game maker Zynga will launch a poker app that will accept Facebook accounts as log-on credentials. Facebook will also be sharing its location APIs, which will let third-party apps tie into the Facebook Places feature. Facebook will also launch a new Deals feature, which will offer location-based deals and special offers from retailers and services. The new platform concept will spread across multiple devices, and Facebook specifically mentioned iOS, Android, Windows Phone 7 and BlackBerry, as well as the basic mobile Web. Symbian support was not announced.
