The CDMA Development Group (CDG) yesterday announced the final approval of CDMA2000 1xEV-DV Release D by the 3GPP2 standards group. Release D provides speeds up to 3.1 Mbps. Unlike 1xEV-DO or Release C, the new standard also provides high speeds for the reverse link (upload) - up to 1.8 Mbps - making it ideal for high-quality video calling and sending megapixel photos. With the standard now finalized, CDG expects the technology to be commercially available in 2005. Sprint has announced its intent to deploy 1xEV-DV.
