service with 5180
We have had two Nokia's 5180ip since about 03. I can't recall what the service was back then but the last time my wife traveled with her's south thru central Ga and Fl she didn't get any service. Last fall I was in Jax Fl for a couple days and I didn't get any service with mine. These areas are listed under service coverage on the web sites maps. Could someone offer a reason why we weren't receiving any service. Is it because the old 5180 is only 800 mhz and Verizon,Sprint put out a dual 800 and 1.9 mhz. That maybe we were in a area putting out only 1.9 mhz. My phone always did get better reception than her's so we gust got a LG200c for her. Since its dual channel do you think our problem will be solved. Getting ready to go out of state and ...

Wow some one still has a activated Nokia 5180!
Keep in mind a 5180 is only a dual mode handset meaning it does only 850Mhz and Analog. Most providers like Sprint, Verizon , old Skool Bell Atlantic and US Cell did away with that handset back in 2002 since most carriers went to a tri mode system before shuting down there aold .
I dont think Tracphone would even bother reactivateing a 5180 since a new phone is stupid cheap now.
If I were you I would buy a new phone. Tracphone is ok but dont expect the world from them. If I were you I would buy a cheap 9.99 ATT Go Phone or a cheap 9.97 Tracphone at Wal-Mart.

if they don't have aGPS on them you will not be able to reactivate them.
Tracphone does not own any towers, so their entire coverage is off of roaming agreements. As others have stated, you will only be able to get the 850 band, and only on towers that tracfone pays their owners to have access to.
Tracphone sells both GSM and CDMA phones. This means that Tracfone can have CDMA roaming agreements where you are traveling, but if you have a GSM phone, it will show no service (and vice versa).
I would recommend either getting a new phone (and checking the technology to make sure it works where you need it) or go with Verizon/ATT or some other carrier's prepaid so you know exactly where their phones should work.

We actually had two 5180's activated. Mine was new and the wifes was a refurbished one when purchased in 03. The 5180's are CDMA and no aGPS. Mine got way better reception than hers. We decided to try a new phone. Since we have mostly Verizon and CDMA around here I bought a LG 200c at Kmart and transfered her phones stuff to it . It got better reception than her old 5180 but my old 5180 gets up wards of two bars and service when the LG drops. While looking for a car charger for the LG I found a new Nokia 2126i at a Kerr Drug store. It gets better reception than the LG 200 but my old 5180 still seems to do better. For now we are going to keep my old 5180 and the new 2126i activated. We are also going to get a Verizon Moto W755 and see which t...

There is an agps law. I have no idea how Tracphone will get around it.
Perhaps there is some loophole for reactivating equipment on an existing account. You can't do it with Verizon plans (and I assume ATT/Sprint etc) but maybe Virtual prepaids work differently.
