LG Cosmos 3 question, buying aftermarket? Ebay?
Anyway, her kids (she's on a family plan) used all the upgrades. She's got close to 2 years left before she can get an upgrade deal. The only option was to buy a brand new Cosmos 3...full retail...$200!!!
So I was thinking of buying one -- new -- in the aftermarket, primarily via ebay. Is this a good idea? If so, how can I assure that I buy the phone, look to activate it with Verizon, keeping her same/old phone number, and that it will work?
Do I have any options here? I would love to buy her a new Cosmos 3 for Christmas, but I can't really see spending $200...

If you can find a new one on ebay that is not attached to any contract, good for you. Generally speaking, anything online that says "new" either isn't actually new, or has a contract. If that line can't upgrade, you won't be able to buy one new from most vendors on ebay. Check for the contract details, if any.
The rule of thumb whenever buying a phone that's used or sold outside of the Verizon direct and indirect sales system is to look for the following:

I looked around ebay, found one vendor who properly and accurately represented the phone. His phone # was in the ad so I called him. He gave me the ESN # and is also highly rated on ebay. He's sold about 50 of these phones. He also has a no question asked return policy. It appears that everything checked out.
So, I ended up buying one from him. It just got delivered today -- so I'll have it on Monday, will give it as a Christmas gift on Thursday and we'll see how it goes.
Thanks again for your help and advice.
So what's the story with a "swollen" battery? Swollen? What does that mean? Thanks again.
Without going into the technical, a swollen battery is an outward sign of a battery that needs to be replaced. The more swollen it gets, the worse off the battery is. You would have diminished life between charges, as well as very long (or very short) charge times.
As long as everything else is OK, and I can get the phone activated properly with Verizon, the phone is clean, no scratches, etc. -- if the worst thing was that I had to get a new battery, so be it. That should be my worst problem, LOL.
Thanks again.
