Bay Area GSM Useless? CDMA better?
Are the dead spots in downtown Mountain View on GSM or TDMA?
I live in Palo Alto, but I'm pretty much traveling back-and-forth between Palo A., Mountain V., Menlo P. and Los Altos.
I used to have TDMA up until 2 years ago and it was pretty much awesome. Then I went to Verizon to get the V60c which was also flawless except for one big, solid black hole in downtown Los Altos, so last year I returned to AT&T, but decided to try out their GSM network instead, and I have to say that I'm pretty dissapointed. I've been thinking about going back to TDMA even if their phones are....bland. However, I've heard some people mention lately that even their TDMA net isn't up to what it used to be. CDMA is much more flexible in the long run for the company, allowing quicker speeds for data, etc.
GSM (Global Standards for Mobile Communications) is a distant variant of TDMA, but is completely different, and much more efficient then TDMA or even CDMA.
NONE of the above information will mean you will get better reception someplace, only that you might get a tad better voice quality, with TDMA giving the least quality, GSM the best.
CDMA2000 is a few years away, still. Don't bother even worrying about that, it won't effect you as the consumer for many years, but what he says is true.. CD...
