3G maps: AT&T vs. Verizon

So, seeing as I have been working for AT&T for awhile, and I was tired of being in the dark about the validity of the Verizon commercials that talk about AT&T's lack of 3G coverage, I did some detective work of my own. This is what I have concluded. But please correct me if I am wrong...

The map of our 3G coverage is the true map on the commercials.

The map of Verizon's 3G coverage is not their 3G map.

The map they show is in fact their EVDO map (End Voice Data Only.)

If you go on to the AT&T website, you can check both the voice coverage as well as the 3G coverage for your specific location.

If you go on to the Verizon website, you can check the voice coverage only.

If you try to check the 3G coverage for your location on...

If you try to check the 3G coverage for your location on the Verizon website, it will simply show you the EVDO map again.

Select "Broadband & V CAST" to see VZW's 3G, perhaps your not looking closely enough, but there is a minor difference. But that's why VZW advertises more 3G in more places.

Another big thing to look at is that AT&T's EDGE (2G) supports streaming video, MMS and Email. Although it doesn't browse extremely fast it can still hammer out Google results and maps very quickly. You can still get Turn-by-Turn directions through EDGE and watch Youtube (after a minor Buffer).

Verizon's "2G" doesn't have the versatility AT&T's does. 1xRtt averages 60-80kbps while EDGE average 180-200kbps after AT&T upgraded it back in 2007.

Yep yep! 😎 When I know that I'm going to be out for a long time and I cant afford to be without a charged battery..... I switch my Bold to 2G, and Pandora (I don't like Slacker) streams just as good as when on 3G. It would only buffer if I open the browser, and not right away, after a few mins of browsing...

Slacker and Pandora both stream over 1x as well. The buffer between songs is a bit longer, but I'm in 1x coverage only rarely so I barely notice it. I traveled from philly almost to New York today, along the back roads of PA. I went to 1x 2 times that I noticed, both times just a patch. My brother (att) spent most of that time without signal, or when he had it, at slow edge speeds.

🤣 🤣 🤣
Verizon, bringing 3G to those who take the road less traveled.

Unfortunately for Verizon, the road less traveled has fewer roaming agreements than in times past. Sorry, but I'll take better 911 coverage to better 3G any day.

How often do you call 911? Besides only sissies call for help. Real men fix their own broken leg, stab wound, etc.. 😎

I live in the northeast, went to college in the midwest. I have yet to be anywhere where my phone says no service.

So I'll take my 911 coverage, my voice calls, and my 3g over pitiful EDGE speeds and constant deadzones anyday.

maybe when everyone wakes up they will realize it depends on where you live to state your OPINION of which carrier is better there.

I want to at least have good 2G coverage. For where I travel, T-Mobile has quite a few no service areas. So I won't get their service. AT&T has a few no service areas too for where I travel, but it's small & mostly in a few cornfields that have no nearby towers.

That is not correct. It means EVolution Data Optimized. See below.

The map verizon users IS their EVDO map. EVDO is their "3g" technology. You go to Broadband and Vcast at the site to toggle it. This is their 3g map (the blue and I think the yellow for roaming). EVDO is Data only, aka their data network. Verizon phones split data and voice into two separate signals.

3g DOES NOT mean only HSPA or HSPA+ or UMTS. It also means EVDV and EVDO. Verizon stopped calling it EVDO (or broadband) and started calling it 3g because of customers like you who were brainwashed into thinking 3g was the technology not the generation.

Oh, and that test covered 13cities (seemingly chosen at random) that cover approximately 7 million residents (2% or less of the population) and doesn't list ANYWHERE what steps the t...

"...because of customers like you who were brainwashed into thinking 3g was the technology not the generation."

i wasnt aware i was one of these customers...seeing as i work in the store, id consider myself an employee...

i think that verizon needs to explain exactly what you just (somewhat) explained in their commercials. if these people are in fact 'brainwashed,' than perhaps it is solely to blame on confusing 'false' advertising...and it is false. anything that is not a true fact and is used as a ploy to sell a product to consumers is considered 'false advertising...'

or maybe you didnt know that.

next time you want to insult someone, read the entire post first...obviously, i was asking for help in my misunderstanding of ver...

you were saying 3g didn't count because it was showing EVDO.

EVDO=3g
Simple

You can't explain what I did in a 30second commercial and still advertise your point.

The maps are pretty clear, Verizon has more data coverage than ATT. No false advertising. EVDO is a 3g network, and Verizon's 3g is bigger.

Verizon never claimed to be faster.

ATT was the one claiming lightning speeds when they are JUST hitting them this year (insert link to the pcword tests here)

In addition, you have to see the speeds, ATT Edge or 2.5G Is running about the same speed as VZW 3g coverage now, we are in the process of doing major backhaul updates to the network that will allow our true 3g speeds be at 7.2 mbps. I know if FL the Miami area is seeing an improvement on speeds due to the backhaul update and software has been updated in network for HSPA+, n ow its going to take some time for techs to go out and take down copper lines and install the fiber lines. We have some 3g markets running on the higher speed rt now. Hope it was helpfull!
