4G means fourth-generation, as in the fourth incarnation of the iPhone. It does not mean that the phone will run off of a 4G network; in fact, the 4G iPhone will be 3G only.
That will be all.
...
There's a "4", and a "G". This means it will be a "4G" phone! And isn't that really what matters?
...
Geez, some people will say anything to badmouth the competition. Even blatently say that the 4G isn't "Technically" what it is!
...
Wait, the 4G network, or the fourth-generation 3G iPhone?
Gah, you're confusing me!
...
THE 4G PHONE! DON'T YOU READ?!? I WANT ONE O' THEM iPHONES THAT'S 4G!!!
...
But... but... that was exactly what I...
Nevermind.

Oh, man - I think I can hear the complaining now! I hope they name it the 3GS2 or something like that. The 4.0 software upgrade is going to be tough enough to explain (I'm calling it "four-dot-oh" just to help avoid such problems)
...
That would not be correct though. It's four dot zero, their is no letter in the 4.0
...
OMG are youuu anal!!!!!

If the iPhone 4G is really just a fourth Generation iPhone launched in 2010, then:
2009 == iPhone 3G
2008 == iPhone 2G
2007 == iPhone 1G
but I thought it went...
2007 == iPhone 2G
2008 == iPhone 3G
2009 == iPhone 3G S
Or where did I go wrong in my math?
Anyhow, Apple will never brand it as the 4G anyway. That's just internet hype. They will call it the iPhone HD or something most likely.
...
what do you think apple will call the new iphone coming out the iphone 5?
...
a little late for the part bro 🤨
...
WOW! how dumb. you really think just because it has 4g in it, it will run off the 4g network ??? HAHAHA!
ALL PRODUCTS have new generations that beat their last one they made.
EXAMPLE-
Playstation, Xbox, Nintendo, APPLE! just to name a few. I have the Ipod 3G-as in the NEWEST ipod they created, doesn't mean my Ipod has 3G coverage!
...
The next 18 months will be very interesting when all the major carriers are working on launching 4G networks and ATT is sitting still as usual with their 3G network. Heck, even MetroPCS has been mentioned on Phone Scoop of launching an LTE network. Maybe ATT will be the next Sprint and start bleeding customers. . .true high speed data is where it's @!!!
...
AT&T has a few core demographics that are unmoved by "ZOMG DATA!!!"
1) iPhone... thru 2012 (if original contract holds)
2) Old people, basic phones. Fast data? What's that sunny? HUH?
3) families that are more than happy with $10 data on mid-range phones (4 phones with $10 data... is alot better than 4 phones with $30 data.) Don't need speed on an Impression or a Neon.
I don't doubt they will lose customers... but I think they are safe where they are at, atleast for a short time.
LTE isn't even finalized as a spec yet... WiMax is just getting started. It'll take a few years for either to have a footprint large enough to scare AT&T.
...
Let me see if I got this right. A 4g phone for a 3g network thats 2.5g. I'm getting confused. Do you multiply the 4 by the 3 and carry the the 2.5 or what?
...
the 2.5g is silent. So you subtract the 3G network from the 4G phone leaving AT&T #1.
...
Lots of customer calls telling us that the '4G iPhone' is right around the corner. Just thought I'd set it straight for anybody who didn't know. 🤤
...
Wow, did you even bother to do ANY research before posting your factually innacurate statement? Did you bother to read any press releases by AT&T that discuss their focus on LTE/4G ongoing as we speak? Their plans to begin rollout in 2011? Obviously not. You think that AT&T is so stupid as to not be focused on LTE until long after Verizon and Sprint? You're just like alot of other posters and bloggers who don't do extensive research to back their claims. Do you understand the pain process that Verizon will have in launching a GSM LTE device and making it backwards compatible with their CDMA/EVDO network? Please people, research your info first!

Whatever happened to when people would actually post valuable information on this site - anymore its completely ridiculous items like this and flame wars. Phonescoop has officially become the "highscool" of cell phone forums.

I think it's cause most people on the forums are CS or sales and so lots of tension in our daily duties so it's quite easy to be combative.

Couldn't agree more. I rarely come here anymore, there is so much misinformation it makes me sick. If you want quality information it's all about howardforumms, BGR, or crackberry forums.
...
by that logic wouldn't that mean the iphone 3g was named incorrectly?
...
TwurkMay 24, 2010, 4:04 PM
its the 4 generation iphone
iphone 2g was the first
iphone 3g was the 2nd
then iphone 3gs was the 3rd.
the next one wil lbe the 4th installment in the series but the name iphone 4g isnt what has been actually stated it will be called. people are using that name to describe. if u want it to have 4g then you will have to wait till when att rolls out theier 4g network which they state wone be till about 21011(maybe) and by then some other carriers may have but that last part is opinion
...
Holy crap, 21011?! Nineteen thousand years before they see 4G... Sorry, but I think all the other carriers will be broadcasting networks between galaxies by then. 🤤
...
TwurkMay 24, 2010, 5:47 PM
🤣 i meant 2011. finger slipped
...
I hear ya. If one more dumb ars asks for a 4G iphone I'm gonna punch her/him/kid!
Its really only a big deal to those of us that care what the correct word or phrase is. Obviously most customers do not fall in that category.
I get so worn out by repetitive iphone crap, that I'm just letting it go now to their face, but inside I'm like "you ruhtard, its the fourth version call it the 4th iphone"
...
OK, but you never did tell us when y'all are goin' to be gittin' them thar 4G iPhones.
...
Would one of you people read the box. The phone is the iPhone 4S. The letter G is not included in its name anywhere. The 4S is the second iteration of the the iPhone 4, which was the 4th generation of iPhone.
Second, the iPhone 4S for ATT is HSPA+, which by the new definition is a 4G phone. The phone does not say 4G on the screen because Apple is waiting for an LTE version so that it does not have to have totally different software for ATT versus the CDMA carriers.
Third, as of January 5, 2012, ATT has opened up LTE to 26 markets covering oveer 74 million consumers. I have an LTE phone, live in anLTE market and it is VERY fast in comparison to 3g. And if the phone is not in anLTE market, it falls back to HSPA+ which is up to 3 times f...

So, PhonemanJ, how is the lawnmower business?
