Yes, but you have to open it to reply.

If you're asking about the VZW version, no you cannot read texts on the front. You see the envelope notifying you that you have a message, but you must open the the flip to read and reply. This is one of the reasons I returned the phone.

No idea. I returned the V9m because I thought the huge outer screen was useless. With my old LG 8100 I could read the text messages on the front. I ended up getting the new Chocolate instead, which has pretty much everything I want in a phone.
On a side note, I love VZW's coverage and cust service and have been with them a long time. But their plans are just too expensive. I share 700 minutes between 2 lines and I pay $100 a month. This is because I have the $70/month plan, plus $5 each for 250 text msgs, $5 web on one phone, and $5.99 ins on each phone. I can tell you that the curve will see the light of day on the CDMA carriers as well. Expect to see them make an appearance early 2008. Also know that Sprint will launch Airave and has a lot better coverage and voice quality than T-Mobile. You might also check your neck of the woods for current promotions because there are some great ones around the nation especially S.F. area. Not to mention Sprint has unlimited text for $10 and automatic 7pm nights and weekends on all the power pack plans. Did I mention Sprint's V9m allows you to read texts and watch Sprint TV on the outside? Doesn't sound like a waste of screen with the Black and Yellow.

I have heard the VZW will get the Curve also. I don't think Sprint is an option for me. My husband's company used a Sprint phone for work, and he dropped calls constantly at home. I did just read about Airave and it sounds interesting. I agree the Sprint v9m is a lot more functional than the VZW. However, I have friends with Sprint and I know for a fact that customer service is absolutely horrible. I've also heard bad things about At&t/Cingular. So at this point, only VZW and Tmobile are my options. And Tmobile just gives you more plan options and bang for the buck.
