Samsung SCH-A610

I am having problems with my a610 now! every once in a while my screen just goes blank for a long period of time. I try taking the battery out and starting the phone back up but it still stays the same! Does anybody know the cause of this and is anybody else experiencing the same problem? a friend of mine suggested that the phone was new and the software was outdated? well hollar bak!
